Your Love Story
We met at high school and started dating in our last year of school. We were on holiday in Vanuatu – having a picnic on a Deserted Island. We are huge ‘Survivor’ fans and knew that a season of Survivor had been filmed on one of Vanuatu’s Islands so whist searching the Island for potential left over Survivor memorabilia, Matt dropped to one knee and I thought he had found something hidden in the sand – it was in fact THE RING. I had absolutely no idea!!
We always knew we wanted to get married in a beach setting – and although Melbourne has some beautiful beaches, our weather is just too unpredictable! The best thing about doing a destination wedding was the amount of time we got to spend celebrating with our loved ones – it felt like our wedding went on for days!!
We, and most of our guests were in Arlie Beach from Wednesday to Monday – it was a great ‘mini break’ from the cold Melbourne winter! We invited our guests to have sunset drinks and canapés’ with us at Northerlies the evening before the wedding.
Wedding Day Vision
I would describe our theme as ‘Boho Beach’
Sit Down or Cocktail
We had 70 guests and our reception was sit down. We liked the idea of a sit down meal because our guests were treated to canapés at the garden party, straight after the reception and canapés the night before our wedding at Northerlies – so sitting down to eat was a point of difference to these.
We went to the Maldives for 7 nights and stayed in an Overwater Villa at Lux South Atoll.
Hens and Bucks
Matt went to the races for his bucks and the girls organised drinks and a ‘life drawing’ lesson for my hens.
Splurge vs Save
We splurged on the fireworks, they were a must-have for us.
We saved on wedding cars as having the ceremony and reception in one place allowed us to do this.
Whitsunday Wedding Venue
We chose Villa Botanica because it was perfectly ‘US’! We are Bali fans and have travelled there together many times over the years.
Having our wedding in Bali would not have been practical for our families and so this was the closet thing to ‘Bali’ in Australia. We flew to Airlie Beach to visit Villa Botanica before we booked our wedding.
Villa Botanica’s photos are beautiful but being there in real life is just something else…… It’s the way the warmer weather makes you feel, the smell of the ocean and the sound of the waves that hit the rocks at the bottom of the cliff!
Whitsunday Wedding Dream Team
We went off the recommendations from Villa Botanica for our cake, makeup, hair, spray tan, decoration and entertainment suppliers. We knew that they would know the best local suppliers and they were spot on! We were very happy with everyone and that was a huge relief when planning a destination wedding from afar!
